Black Sheep – “Party Tonight” Feat. Jean Grae
Jul 15th
“Party Tonight“, featuring Jean Grae, is the latest single from Black Sheep’shighly anticipated LP From The Black Pool Of Genius. The latest single demonstrates the long-standing power of the well-executed male/female duet. “It’s a ‘this feels great’ jam,” says Jean Grae. “You know, like a party that people actually have fun at – always needed, always timeless.” And although Jean Grae says, “Of course it was an honor to record with Dres. The moment was kind of surreal for me,” the feeling was mutual. “I had a lot of fun with Jean Grae in the studio,” explains Dres. “She’s quick-witted and pretty funny… it was nice to see her spit too. Her mechanics are tight. All the components were there from the beginning.”
Produced by UrbanSoul Music Group, the track comes to life with the nostalgic crackle of a spinning vinyl, a reverb injected guitar melody, and a pocket rhythm section reminiscent of the soulful ’70s. Dres and Grae draw on their verbal prowess to decorate the musical fixture with potent imagery of hip-hop‘s illustrious party scene, all the while remaining true to the actualities of reality. With a deft and poetic cadence Dres calls, “I’m only tryin’ to party tonight/ I ain’t sprung/ Elated, I’m a product that be native to the tongue/ Related, I’m the object that equated to the sun/ Just trying to seize the words to the songs you ain’t sung,” only to meet the humorous yet pithy response of Grae, “I shake it like the bar tender making my drink/ I’m a lady though/ Think before you play me close/ Party on further than Wayne, Garth/ harder than Richards, Keith”. A mellow soul banger, “Party Tonight” is yet another triumphant track coming from a freshly groomed Black Sheep.
Fans can also check out Dres representing Black Sheep with the official From The Black Pool Of Genius album release party Tuesday, June 29th at Taj, where Dres will be performing tracks from the new album. The Background:
It all began with a thundering baseline and an unmistakably classic phrase – “this or that.” One of the most widely recognized songs in rap music history, the 1991 classic “The Choice is Yours” was hailed by VH1 in 2008 as one of the best rap songs of all time. The highly respected Queens emcee Dres, along with DJing partner-in-crime William “Mista Lawnge” McLeantook the music industry by storm in the early 1990′s as part of the groundbreaking collective Native Tongues. Penning such Billboard standouts as “Flavor of the Month” and “Strobelight Honey” for the duo’s platinum-selling debut album A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing in 1992, Dres would continue to crank out the hits on the group’s second release, Non Fiction. After a brief reunion with Mister Lawnge in 2000, Dres again set his sights on recording. He released the innovative online-only album8WM/Novakane in 2007. Now he’s back in the studio, writing the next chapter of his storied career. Dres’ highly anticipated new project, From the Black Pool of Genius, out Spring 2010, promises to pair thought-provoking lyrics with astounding beats constructed by a corps of new and established beatmakers. They include Bean One, Showbiz, Tough Junkie, P. Locke, Urban Soul Music Group, and Willie Evans. He’s also got an impressive line-up of guest stars, including De La Soul,A Tribe Called Quest, Rhymefest, AZ, Jean Grae, Rosie Perez, Psycho Les of The Beatnuts, and Tough Junkie, among others. Leading up to the release of his next full-length, Black Sheep have released a precursor EP, From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude, available now. From The Black Pool Of Genius will be available on June 29th.

MP3: Metermaids – “Yellow Tape”
Jun 15th
| Releasing the second single off their mixtape, HELLO, Metermaids, brings another indie rock remix that reworks the original with DJ Rob Swift and producer, Matt Stine. Taking Grizzly Bear‘s hit, “Two Weeks“, Swell and Sentence of Metermaids again add their own twist, crafting an original concept, new lyrics, and a new melody utilizing piano and vocal chops from Grizzly Bear’s catchy original into their own “Yellow Tape“.
Expanding creatively, Metermaids have changed the message of the song from the original. Taking the perspective of a police officer at a crime scene, the “Yellow Tape” represents a line of uncertainty. “The song is about not knowing what is going on when everyone else thinks that you do,” says Swell, one half of Metermaids. “None of us know what’s going to happen.” Even though there are apparent differences, the remix still holds the original’s chorus and melody under the layers of beats and turntables, doused with a rougher finish courtesy of the track’s heavy drums and Sentence’s and Swell’s back-and-forth rhyme style. HELLO, mixed by DJ Rob Swift, will be out June 22nd. Metermaids Rooftop Shake, produced entirely by 9th Wonder, will be available this fall. Listen to “Yellow Tape” Here: The Background: Hailing from New York City, Metermaids are Swell and Sentence, two emcees who met through the local underground hip-hop scene in 2006. After releasing their debut EP the same year, the duo toured with the likes of Brand Nubian, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Fabulous, Lady Bug Mecca (Digable Planets), The Lox, and Camp Lo. After this extensive and impressive tour, the duo released their first full-length effort in 2008 entitled Nightlife, exemplifying their choice to create a new sound in crossover music, blending indie rock with hip-hop. The release was followed up with the EP Nightlife In Illinoise. Never resting, that EP was followed with their “Turn The Lights Out” video which quickly became an internet sensation. The follow-up, the critically acclaimed Smash Smash Bang EP earned the group immense industry support, and the interest of top hip-hop producers including 9th Wonder. The band’s music is available for free at the group’s official website. |

MP3: Darryl Moore – “Long Gone”
Jun 15th
|
Critical Praise for Darryl Moore: “It is the versatility of Moore’s performances over different styles that result in the highlights of his album Where I’m At.” -OkayPlayer.com The Song: Soul-singer Darryl Moore bleeds raw soul and heartbreak over a jazzy instrumental produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow. “Long Gone,” featured on Darryl’s recently released Where I’m At, is an apology to a woman wronged that leaves him. Darryl narrates both sides of the story in a vocal monologue. He responds to his own “I’m so sorry baby,” with rhetorical questions like, “What if I came in at 6 o’clock in the morning like you did? What if I did the things that you did?” When asked if he was trying to relay a message in the song, Darryl responded, “We say that we’re sorry, but after forgiven we go right back to point A again which caused the mess up in the first place. Not realizing that the second time around is a lot more severe – we’re taking the term ‘I’m sorry’ for granted.” Darryl Moore’s “Long Gone” was originally on Georgia Anne Muldrow’s Ms. One. When asked who else helped him in the creation of the song, he replied “Georgia Muldrow’s production work inspired me to write this.” Continuing, “I actually thought about Erykah Badu and Jill Scott when I recorded this track being that they are both so theatrical.” Ironically, the feeling was mutual, as Erykah Badu bought the instrumental of the track from Georgia Anne Muldrow, which would eventually be made in to the ten-minute-long “Out My Mind, Just In Time,” released on Badu’s New Amerykah, PT 2: Return of the Ankh. Similar to Moore’s song, Badu sings soulful tunes about making mistakes. The instrumental’s rhythmic base riff allows both artists a lot of room for vocal improvisation. In fact, Darryl Moore says, “I actually freestyled the whole song, absolutely nothing was written down.” “Long Gone” is on Daryl Moore’s recently released Where I’m At. It is also featured on Georgia Anne Muldrow’s album, Ms. One. His acclaimed contribution to Gorilla Zoe‘s hit “Life of a Hustla” ensured Mr. Moore’s name would be whispered among those in the know. These nods of approval would reach as high an academia as Darryl has the distinction of contributing his vocals to “Soul Sista” a collaboration with Cornell West on his “Never Forget a Journey of Street Revelations” album. The record featured the likes of Andre 3000, Jill Scott and Gerald Levert, an impressive feat that seems to predict more greatness ahead from this talented artist. |

MP3: Apollo Brown – “Real Detroit” Feat. The Left and Marv Won
Jun 9th

Apollo Brown Teams Up With Other Half Of Own Hip-Hop Duo And Marv Won To Uncover The Dangerous Streets Of Detroit
Having just recently released his debut album, The Reset, on Mello Music Group, Apollo Brown delivers the new single, “Real Detroit” featuring The Left and Marv Won. The Left, which is Apollo’s own hip-hop collective is composed of himself and fellow Detroit hometown emcee Journalist 103. With plans to release their own album, Gas Mask, later on this year, the duo set out with the purpose of creating a handful of songs dedicated to and inspired by their hometown. “When we were making the Gas Mask album, we wanted to have a couple songs just for Detroit and about Detroit,” says Apollo. With that premise, “Real Detroit” speaks on the city as a hardened place to grow up, but also being a breeding ground responsible for producing some of the finest hip-hop around. From its violence-laden streets to the hustlers that run and rule those streets, Journalist 103 and Marv Won carry the listener from the safety of their home to the dangerous streets of Detroit. Accompanied with a haunting melody, it stays true that talent does spring from Detroit as Apollo Brown’s beats completes the picture of “Real Detroit”.
Apollo Brown’s The Reset is now available via Mello Music Group.

The Background:
Born into a bi-racial family in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Apollo Brown‘s early influences skewed more toward the music of Journey and The Carpenters than the urban genres his peers often cite as inspiration. This is not to say that once hip-hop came into play, Apollo wasn’t all in. Just as easily as he can praise the virtues of yacht rock, the 29-year-old beatsmith can name personal heroes – Gang Starr, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, M.O.P., Nas, and Black Moon – from the early 90s period in which, for him, beats and rhymes became life. Apollo began making his own music in 1996 using Voyetra audio software, then upgraded to Cool Edit 2000 in becoming a self-described bedroom beat-maker for roughly the next eight years. It was the mid-2000s, and the upstart producer saw no future for his work – work he had dedicated his life to – in an industry where radio was setting a formulaic pattern for mainstream music. But he eventually began to miss the creativity in his craft and began producing once again, releasing the instrumental albums Skilled Trade (2007) and Make Do (2009). He went on in 2009 to win the Detroit Red Bull Big Tune Championships and competed in the national finals. Apollo then signed as a producer with the Mello Music Group in December of 2009. His debut album, The Reset, is available now via Mello Music Group.
About Mello Music Group:
Like Lao Tzu in hip-hop, Mello Music Group provides music for the soul, from the heart of American culture, opening the realm of the intelligent hip-hop experience through melodic evocations, beats that corroborate the truth, and voices that roar above the rising void and impose order on the terrible & triumphant moments of everyday life. This is the compelling sound of Mello Music Group. Industry newcomer Michael Tolle founded MMG in 2007 and is acting Director of Operations. MMG will be releasing projects from Oddisee, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kenn Starr, Finale, Trek Life, Dudley Perkins, Sareem Poems, UPS, and YU in 2010. http://www.myspace.com/mellomusicgroup
