MP3 & Video: DaVinci – “Trickle Down” Prod. By Blunt

Bay Area’s Next In Line, DaVinci Brings A Poignant Message About Government And Community To Listeners

Bay Area's Next In Line, DaVinci Brings A Poignant Message About Government And Community To Listeners

Bay Area's Next In Line, DaVinci Brings A Poignant Message About Government And Community To Listeners

The Song:

As DaVinci continues to build momentum for the March 9th release of his full-length album, The Day The Turf Stood Still, he is unleashing the second in a series of three pre-album tracks. This second offering, “Trickle Down,” is again produced by Blunt, and again displays DaVinci’s poignant, yet street-corner informed, take on the Bay Area blocks that raised him and the world at large that surrounds him. As the song begins with relaxing jazz sounds, the realization soon hits that the song isn’t about relaxation at all. As DaVinci’s voice cuts through the music, the heady subject matter emerges as he raps about his neighborhood where survival is about gang wars, hate, and animosity. Taking it a step further, he compares the inne rworkings of street life to the machinations of modern day governments.

As DaVinci raps, “Hate is power, love is a weakness / You do wrong the right way, they call you a genius,” the rising Bay Area emcee’s powerful message resonates loud and clear – what’s valued in the streets seems to be exactly what is valued in politics too. This is the trickle down effect that grips the government and the community. “No government is perfect,” says DaVinci. “But if you represent a nation built on lies, cheating, thieves, murder, slavery, and the like, it’s going to be difficult for the people who make up that nation to see this as wrong.”

Further proving the Bay Area emcee’s penchant for releasing quality content, joining “Trickle Down” is a video montage, commanded by DaVinci’s own firm narrative. “Take a ride with me,” begins DaVinci over the sounds of a beating heart. Coming together with the driving strength of DaVinci’s words is a number of different black and white images, each signaling its own significance to the Fillmore native’s experiences, thoughts, and themes found throughout his music.

The Background:

The Fillmore District has bred more rappers per capita than any other district in San Francisco, and although the older generations recall its rich musical history rooted in Jazz, the Fillmore today is rife with drugs, turf wars, and mass gentrification. DaVinci, a young MC raised in the Fillmore, is a prime example of the duality of this area, who at the age of 13 was homeless, hungry, and hopeful for a way out. Explains DaVinci, “My music has everything to do with my environment: from robbing, killing, pimpin’ to selling and abusing drugs,” he explains about his heavy content. “It’s a direct reflection of what my friends and family have been through and are still going through.” While his story is similar to many other young rappers’ upbringings, DaVinci was surrounded by an incredible pool of Fillmore talent and by studying with the greats, he was able to sharpen his skills and aim higher than most, cultivating his story-telling abilities beyond mere drug-and-gun-talk. Growing up in the same 10-block radius as Bay Area rap legends San Quinn and JT the Bigga Figga, DaVinci was content in merely watching the next generation follow in their footsteps, until he received overwhelming praise from his peers from a mixtape appearance, which then prompted him to pursue rap professionally. In 2006, San Quinn welcomed him onto the “Pressure Makes Diamonds Tour” with rap veterans Xzibit and Tech N9ne. Since the tour, DaVinci has kept busy appearing on numerous mixtapes and compilations, as well as preparing his official debut album, The Day The Turf Stood Still. The Day The Turf Stood Still will be available March 9, 2010 via SWTBRDS Creative Collective.

MP3: Bisco Smith – “Vibrations” (Scott Thorough Remix)

Teaming With Nuclear Family Producer Scott Thorough, Bisco Delivers Genre Bending Remix For The Broadcast’s Newest Single

Teaming With Nuclear Family Producer Scott Thorough, Bisco Delivers Genre Bending Remix For The Broadcast's Newest Single

Teaming With Nuclear Family Producer Scott Thorough, Bisco Delivers Genre Bending Remix For The Broadcast's Newest Single

The Song:

After Bisco Smith’s newest album, The Broadcast, arrived with a bang, he has taken his single, “Vibrations” to the next level with its revamped remix. Producer Scott Thorough was brought in for this remix to provide a different angle for the edgy single. A Brooklyn native, Thorough is a member of the Nuclear Family and has produced remixes for Embedded Music and Def Jux artists Baje One, Cool Calm Pete, Core Rhythm, and more, along with his frequent collaborations with Bisco. “Scott has remixed a bunch of tunes for me in the past and always comes with the dark, heavy, hard-hitting material,” says Bisco. “I am a fan of dubstep, drum and bass, and heavy electronic tunes and I think Scott always incorporates those elements in what he sends my way.”

The echoed beginning of “We gonna get you out of here,” followed by a moment of dead air, erases all pretense for the remix, opening up the listener to the new possibilities of Scott Thorough’s imaginings. Warped sounds, pounding drums, and a descending synthesizer bass line continuously push the music forward, but in a different way than the original single – its eerie setup, and the feel it provides Bisco’s lyrics, fill the remix with a seemingly slowed, yet driving power. Coming to an end, the remix takes yet another turn, as Bisco directs the drum kick, bass line, and snare hit with his intense, syncopated lyrics. Then, coming full circle, the remix closes the same way it began – an echoing “We gonna get you out of here” permeates the speakers, reinforcing the song’s theme of musical escape as Bisco’s fading vocals wander off, pulling the listener’s thoughts with them. The most musically diverse effort of Bisco’s career, The Broadcast pushes the boundaries of what hip-hop can be, and with the album’s remixes, and the efforts of Scott Thorough, “Vibrations” continues to challenge the hip-hop status quo. Bisco Smith’s The Broadcast is currently available via all digital retailers.

THE BACKGROUND:

Bisco Smith moved to NYC 10 plus years ago from Connecticut and quickly made a name for himself DJ‘ing at clubs, distributing mixtapes, performing at open mics, and in graffiti circles. His debut release, The Basics EP (2006), gained the favorable attention of music critics and his subsequent release, The Stay Up Project mixtape (2007) was downloaded over 5,000 times. Bisco’s penchant for capturing our chaotic reality with his narratives, images, and collaborations has earned him a reputation as one of the most honest and creative artists of today. Going beyond music, Bisco Smith is also an accomplished graphic artist. He’s done cover art, designed promotional materials and spearheaded art direction for artists such as Aesop Rock, The Perceptionists, C-Rayz-Walz, Murs, El-P, and others. His art has been featured in several magazines and art house coffee table books and in galleries, such as Danny Simmon’s Rush Arts Gallery. 2008 was a big year for Bisco. He released the critically acclaimed album When Electric Night Falls (Embedded Music), toured the US, and performed at CMJ, SXSW, Scribble Jam, and NXNE. Since the start of 2009, Bisco has already released a multimedia project entitled The Strange Love Project, and is now preparing for the release of The Broadcast. It is clear that he shows no sign of slowing down. He spends his time designing everything from record covers to websites, painting walls, participating in art gallery shows, and mentoring the city’s youth with art and music, all the while transmitting top quality music to the world. Prepare to tune into Bisco Smith’s forthcoming LP, The Broadcast, available online now.

Battery/Jive Hit-Maker D.C. Don Juan Prepares “Lookie Looky” For Radio, Digital Retailers

D.C.'s Own Celebrates Hit Single With Official MP3 And Video Release

D.C.'s Own Celebrates Hit Single With Official MP3 And Video Release

The Song:

Battery/Jive recording artist D.C. Don Juan has wasted no time getting his career in full swing. Shortly after signing his major label deal, the D.C.-raised rapper who has previously honed his skills under the driving motivation of NBA stars DerMarr Johnson, Allen Iverson, and Carmelo Anthony, released the video for his exciting new single, “Lookie Looky,” receiving both commercial and critical acclaim. Proud of the video’s early success, D.C. Don Juan and Battery Records are proud to announce the release of the single to radio as well as the release of the mp3 and video to all digital retailers, including industry leader iTunes.

Built around a descending, staccato synthesizer line, the infectious “Lookie Looky” quickly kicks into high gear as strings, bending synthesizers, and bouncy, bass-heavy drums back up the rapper’s infectious, sing-along chorus and winding verses. Not to be outshined by the song’s catchy beat, the video pits D.C. Don Juan as the clear star of the show, as the up-beat, club-ready song receives the perfect visual treatment – D.C. Don Juan intermingles with attractive women, rolling cars, and fun, visually tantalizing special effects. Scanning from scene to scene, the video’s innovative, sidewalk-chalk-inspired look offers a popping, light-hearted cartoon emphasis to illustrate the song’s phrases and imagery, including, of course, the song’s ever-contagious catch phrase, “Lookie Looky.” As D.C. Don Juan’s star continues to rise, we’re pretty sure having people look at him will be the least of his concerns.

The Background:

D.C. Don Juan, born Maurice Campbell Jr., overcame many challenges early in life that forced him to look past the negative and focus on fresh, upbeat, and club-ready music and lyrics. After moving from the Bronx, NY to Washington, D.C., D.C. Don Juan’s passion for music brought him to Atlanta where he flourished. With the help of Dermarr Johnson, long time friend and member of the Denver Nuggets, D.C. Don Juan began his professional career. Recording an astonishing 4,000 songs up to this point in his career, the artist is currently signed to Battery Records, an imprint under Sony Music Entertainment’s RCA/JIVE Label Group, and promoting his new single and video, “Lookie Looky”. The song has made huge waves in D.C. Don Juan’s hometown of Washington, D.C. and is increasing in popularity across the nation.

MP3: DaVinci – “It’s On Me” Prod. By Blunt

Next In Line, The Fillmore's Own Releases New Song In Anticipation Of Forthcoming Debut, The Day The Turf Stood Still

Next In Line, The Fillmore's Own Releases New Song In Anticipation Of Forthcoming Debut, The Day The Turf Stood Still

The Song:

Up and coming emcee DaVinci is hard at work making a name for himself. Recently signing with Bay-Area label SWTBRDS Creative Collective, DaVinci will soon unleash his music onto the masses with his debut album The Day The Turf Stood Still – scheduled to hit the streets on March 9, 2010. Building momentum for the release, in addition to releasing material from his upcoming debut, DaVinci will be releasing three bonus tracks not on the album. Rather than throwaways, all three are album-quality songs, simply completed too late to make the final cut. Up first, DaVinci offers us “It’s On Me,” and with this initial offering, gives listeners, both familiar and unfamiliar with DaVinci’s prior work, a window into his prior life – telling his own story of struggling his way out of a lifestyle of crime, taking big steps to help himself move up in the world. Raps DaVinci, “I’m at the bottom with the roaches and rats, but I’m climbing to the top with the snakes and cats.” Hoping to affect a greater change in the world than merely tell his own story, DaVinci looks at “It’s On Me” as a way to both inspire and prove his own merits. “I came up wit the concept to inspire people to take initiative for their hustle,” says DaVinci. “The message here is, ‘If I don’t do it, nobody else will,’ so I felt the need to convey exactly why I think people should give my music a chance.”

The slick production is courtesy of Vancouver producer Blunt, behind all three forthcoming pre-album tracks, perhaps most well known for his production efforts with Freeway – Blunt produced a majority of Freeway’s Month Of Madness. DaVinci was introduced to Blunt through a mutual friend over email, and was an instant fan of his beats: “The track was dope without anyone even rapping on it, so I just wanted to make sure that there was a marriage between the beat and my lyrics.”

Clear Label Records Reveals Prolific Release Schedule For 2010

Bay Area Label Readies Releases From League510, Chris Marsol, D-Lo, Shady Nate And More

Bay Area Label Readies Releases From League510, Chris Marsol, D-Lo, Shady Nate And More

(January 21, 2010 – Brooklyn, NY) The year is yet young, and looking to make an impact in independent hip-hop in 2010 is Clear Label Records. The Bay Area label, in conjunction with a partnership with Pushing the Beat called ClearBeat, is proud to announce its lineup for the new year, which will see releases from League510, Chris Marsol, Shady Nate, D-Lo, Yung Moses and others.

Clear Label Records has been making great strides in the independent hip-hop community since first opening its doors in 1999. Owned and operated by Tajai Massey, celebrated recording artist with the group Souls of Mischief and the Hieroglyphics crew, the label is concentrating on developing its artists in 2010 while also casting a wide net for Bay Area projects with ClearBeat. Working with Jay Moe on ClearBeat has proved to be an inspired idea, as according to Tajai, “[Jay] has his ear to the street and he’s a leader – he’s really brought me a host of the hottest artists in the Bay Area – respected in the streets and in the industry.”

Clear Label’s mission to continue its musical hot streak begins with town techno engineers, League510. The inventive MC’s will be dropping the Invasion Vol. 1 mixtape for fans in February, which will be followed up by the second quarter release of their debut album, To The Beat. Labelmate Mr. Brady will maintain the melodious movement with the release of his Labor Of Love compilation album, featuring an astounding list of guest artists, including Guilty Simpson, Tajai, Black Milk, Diamond D, Shawn Jackson, Moka Only, Aloe Black, Blame One, and more. Also slated to drop in 2010 are albums from Baby Jaymes, FAMSYRK, “Hate To Lose” songster Chris Marsol, and a rock-oriented project from heavy metal mashers, Trouble In Paradise.

2010 will also prove to a productive year for Clear Label cohorts ClearBeat, who have their own generous plate of sonic servings for the year. ‘Mr. No Hoe’ AKA D-Lo will be dropping his official debut, Undeniable Talent on ClearBeat/SMC Records, and will also hit the road for a springtime tour with The Pack and League510, while Beeda Weeda’s Thug, Fly and Flashy is set for a 2010 release and will be preceded by singles and videos for “Hella Shit” and “Boo Thang.” The Bay Area auditory assault continues with releases of the Shady Nate effort, “Stupid Leanin” from his hit 2009 release Gasman Unleashed project, followed by Shady Nate’s official debut album, Son Of The Hood. An offering from Under Survalance (X.O., G-Wett, Aug) is also on tap, as the trio readies its album Parole, Probations & Violations.

ClearBeat continues the collaborations in 2010 by teaming up with DJ Fresh and his famed Tonite Show franchise. Last year saw Tonite Show releases from D-Lo, Messy Marv, San Quinn, and Young Gully, and this year’s season will feature projects with Clyde Carson, Mitchy Slick, Lil’ B from The Pack, Sleepy D, and Yung Moses.

Staying busy will be the last of these two artists, Sleepy D, and Yung Moses, who will be dropping both Rudeboy Academy and Moses Music, respectively, in an effort to keep the spirit of the eventful new year going. 2010 is the year Clear Label Records brings Bay Area talent to the forefront, and with this impressive lineup of releases, the left coast is sure to take a place front and center on hip-hop nation’s stage.

Please contact Michelle or Dan if interested in talking with any Clear Label / ClearBeat artists.
